銀座・中央通りは、昨年9月開業のH＆M、スペインのザラ、今年10月に増床オープンしたユニクロが軒を連ね、いわばファストファッションの激戦区。2011年には、ルイ・ヴィトンが出店を断念したビルに米国のギャップがオープンするほか、フォーエバー21出店の噂もあり、中央通りにグローバル規模のカジュアルブランドが勢ぞろいする。
そのなかでも、アバクロは国内外のセレブが愛用し、ファッション業界にも熱烈なファンが多い。これまではセレクトショップやネット通販でしか購入できなかったため、アバクロファンにとっては待望の直営店オープンとなる。米国でブレイクした6年前から注目していたというファッションプロデューサーの宮井雅史氏は、「ヴィンテージ感覚の独特のデザインが良い。音楽がガンガンに鳴っていて香りがムンムンする店舗など、ほかのブランドにはない世界観と楽しさがアメカジやセレブが好きな層に支持されている」とアバクロの魅力を語る。
一番の魅力は、生地や加工、ディテールまでこだわったものづくりにある。日本での販売価格は米国の4～5割高でやや高い印象。20代の若い世代にとっては気軽に買えない価格帯に設定されている。しかし、ファストファッションとは一線を画した商品が、おしゃれ好きの30～40代に好評だ。
